Argument-based mixed recommenders and their application to movie suggestion

Recommender systems have become prevalent in recent years as they help users to access relevant items from the vast universe of possibilities available these days. Most existing research in this area is based purely on quantitative aspects such as indices of popularity or measures of similarity between items or users. This work introduces a novel perspective on movie recommendation that combines a basic quantitative method with a qualitative approach, resulting in a family of mixed character recommender systems. The proposed framework incorporates the use of arguments in favor or against recommendations to determine if a suggestion should be presented or not to a user. In order to accomplish this, Defeasible Logic Programming (DeLP) is adopted as the underlying formalism to model facts and rules about the recommendation domain and to compute the argumentation process. This approach has a number features that could be proven useful in recommendation settings. In particular, recommendations can account for several different aspects (e.g., the cast, the genre or the rating of a movie), considering them all together through a dialectical analysis. Moreover, the approach can stem for both content-based or collaborative filtering techniques, or mix them in any arbitrary way. Most importantly, explanations supporting each recommendation can be provided in a way that can be easily understood by the user, by means of the computed arguments. In this work the proposed approach is evaluated obtaining very positive results. This suggests a great opportunity to exploit the benefits of transparent explanations and justifications in recommendations, sometimes unrealized by quantitative methods.     

Adaptive landmark recommendations for travel planning: Personalizing and clustering landmarks using geo-tagged social media

When travelers plan trips, landmark recommendation systems that consider the trip properties will conveniently aid travelers in determining the locations they will visit. Because interesting locations may vary based on the traveler and the situation, it is important to personalize the landmark recommendations by considering the traveler and the trip. In this paper, we propose an approach that adaptively recommends clusters of landmarks using geo-tagged social media. We first examine the impact of a trip’s spatial and temporal properties on the distribution of popular places through large-scale data analyses. In our approach, we compute the significance of landmarks for travelers based on their trip’s spatial and temporal properties. Next, we generate clusters of landmark recommendations, which have similar themes or are contiguous, using travel trajectory histories. Landmark recommendation performances based on our approach are evaluated against several baseline approaches. Our approach results in increased accuracy and satisfaction compared with the baseline approaches. Through a user study, we also verify that our approach is applicable to lesser-known places and reflects local events as well as seasonal changes.

Using online consumer reviews as a source for demographic recommendations: A case study using online travel reviews

Online consumer reviews play an important role in the decision to purchase services online, mainly due to the rich information source they provide to consumers in terms of evaluating “experience”-type products and services that can be booked using the Internet, with online travel services being a significant example. However, different types of travelers assess each quality indicator differently, depending on the type of travel they engage in, and not necessarily their cultural or age background (e.g. solo travelers, young couples with children etc.). In this study, we present architecture for a demographic recommendation system, based on a user-defined hierarchy of service quality indicator importance, and classification of traveler types. We use an algebraic approach to ascertain preferences from a large dataset that we obtained from the popular travel website Booking.com using a web crawler and compared with the customer-constructed preference matrix. Interestingly, the architecture of the evaluated recommendation system takes into account already defined demand characteristics of the hotels (such as the number of reviews of specific consumer types compared to the total number of reviews) in order to provide an example architecture for a recommendation system based on user-defined preference criteria.
